Living in Phoenix Arizona

Are you considering moving to Phoenix, Arizona? If so, maybe you'd like a first-hand account of what life here is like for one newcomer. I recently moved to Phoenix from the Pacific Northwest in May of 2007. Prior to this move I'd traveled over half of the United States, living in four separate states primarily along the West Coast (US) and the Midwest (US). I say this to give you an idea of my experiences in terms of geography.

I came to Phoenix to start a new life and I'm pleased to say that's exactly what's happened. After all, with the city being named from the mythical bird that rises from its ashes, it seems to suggest new lives are what the city can offer. The name comes because before the modern metropolis we know today ever existed, an ancient civilization thrived in the exact same spot. Very little is known about that civilization today.

You may know that Phoenix is Arizona's largest city, but did you know it's also its capital? Not only that, but Phoenix (as of 2007) ranks as fifth among the most populated metropolitan areas in the United States. The city sprawls out in all directions, but due to the way it's constructed it feels as though it's all one gigantic cluster of suburbs. You rarely feel as if you're in a "big city" and I've heard people from other cities claim they felt awkward because Phoenix is nothing like metro areas on the East Coast.

The weather's what you might expect: warm and dry in the winter, hot and dry in the summer. I expected it to be living hell down here when I arrived, but having lived here a full year I can tell you the heat's not nearly as oppressive as it may sound. For the most part you're more likely to be indoors and have access to air conditioning. Many people here also have pools in their back yards, too. The winter months are very moderate, but there is some rain during the monsoon seasons. Wonderful storms for those who appreciate that kind of thing!

As far as socially, Phoenix offers quite a bit. Plenty of shopping opportunities, any kind of restaurant you can think of, clubs galore, art galleries and people from every race, religion and subculture imaginable. I've found that, compared to many other parts of the country, Arizona's citizens seem to be genuinely friendly, over all.

In case you're picturing endless sands and cactuses, let me say this: Phoenix has a shocking amount of trees! That's right, I was surprised to see my neighborhood offered everything from citrus trees (oranges, lemons) to pine trees, palm trees and even a fair amount of deciduous trees (ie, broadleafs). This of course welcomes the local birds and in my neighborhood we've got doves, jays, hummingbirds and many other birds. Oh, and you'll see lizards even in the city. Mediterranean geckos is what most of them are.

In conclusion, I can definitely recommend Phoenix as far as a big city worth living in. Sure the heat can be strong from time to time and the traffic's a little crazy, but in all Phoenix offers a great deal that I'm glad I moved here for!

Hope you've found this article helpful! If so, please do bookmark it or spread the word. I'd appreciate it.

Oh, and yes I did take the photographs you see here with my cellphone in 2007.
